June 2019 started with a surprise for the SEO experts; Google rolled out another update. Well, there are two updates, not just one!
Google updates build so much anxiety among marketers and SEO professionals. We should not miss the details if we want our site to rank in the top Google search results. So, we can’t ignore these updates which will transform our SEO campaign.
The two updates, one in the core search algorithm, and another about the diversity of the results rolled out almost simultaneously. Was that unexpected? No, Google has regular core algorithm updates. You may or may not notice it every time. And, essentially, not always should you do something about it.
Don’t be scared; relax! Awareness is the key; here is about what you should do, after the Google core search algorithm update and diversity update.
- Assess the Search Intent
Google wants to diversify the search results; the latest update is regarding the site diversity in search results. To elaborate further, it was a concern for many that the search results were showing too many results for a search query from the same domain. As a result, the users were losing access to the more relevant search listings in the top rankings.
Now, this update will ensure that no more than two results show in the top search results for the same domain. And, sub-domains are treated as a part of the domain! However, it is crucial to note that this won’t affect the featured snippets.
Well, this does not mean no matter how relevant your other pages are your domain will not be listed more than twice in the search results. So, SEO specialists must grab this opportunity to create relevant and SEO-friendly content that Google finds appropriate to show in the top results.
And, what does Google find appropriate? Informational content is the answer! So, if you are optimizing for your product, the content related to the product, which is information about this product, its benefits, uses, etc. has more chances to show in the results compared to the product page itself.
Technically, this update was anticipated. The customers want to know more about your product, and that is there search intent. Google has now modified the search results to match the search intent of users.
So, what do you have to do now? The solution is simple. Just build more informational content.
- Focus on Quality Traffic
Many observed significant changes in their traffic data after the release of the Google core search algorithm update. But, don’t worry; this isn’t a cause for concern!
Do you want visitors without an intention to convert? It is not crucial that you get more traffic, but you should get relevant traffic from the visitors who are interested in your product or service. The latest Google algorithm update will filter out useless traffic to your pages, increasing your chances of conversion.
Monitor your traffic from different sources and analyze the conversion rates of each channel. Specifically, focus on those channels which are bringing higher traffic. It is the best way to achieve conversions.
Apart from that, locate the keywords for which you are ranking and the type of content that your audience has appreciated. All of this will help you increase your search rankings after the recent Google updates. And, this will continue to better your search result ranks, irrespective of Google algorithm updates.
- Produce Variety of Content
If you want to rank for too many text pages for the same target keyword, this Google diversity update will affect you. However, the key to successful SEO is a variety of content. And, Google ranks varied content from the same domain even after the diversity update.
So, after the diversity update, create images, videos, infographics, and text data all for the same target keywords. The diversity update will still allow different, useful, and specific content to rank for the same keyword.
And, needless to mention, the content should not be outdated! Now, would that mean you should rephrase the same content?
User preferences change with time and trends. Now users like to read social media posts. They like videos! So, create what the users want to see and build more content.
So, develop fresh and original content. And don’t forget to make different types of content, video, images, and text, etc. And, change the length of content for specific channels; long-form and short-form content have their own sets of audiences.
You will find so many articles which try to convince you that the quality of content is not the focus of the update. Quality of content is and will always be a ranking factor; even if the new update is not specifically about it. Never ignore the quality!
So, if you are already practicing content diversity, sit back and relax! The recent Google updates are not going to harm you.
- Make Relevant Content
There is so much speculation on the internet regarding the content quality, and whether that matters after the new updates.
But, the relevance of content is also a factor of quality. Well, then the new update is about quality of content. The updated algorithm selectively shows relevant search results to help the user get accurate results for his search intent.
The search intent of the user revolves around solutions to his problems. This is why actionable and informative content has more possibility of ranking. But, the information has to be relevant to the user’s search query.
So, what does the user want to know? Answer this question to yourself before you build your content.
